United Nations and Democracy : Towards Sustainable Peace-bulding, The

The UN has made some important advancement in developing approaches for addressing democracy-related issues. However, there still exists a great need to develop policies that integrate and mainstream democratisation support in peace missions and formulate comprehensive strategies based on lessons learned.
International IDEA, toghether with selected experts and UN officials, identified key issues to be considered for the UN in the formulation of post-conflict strategies that better integrate democratisation support into peace-building missions. This discussion paper was prepared by IDEA for the Conference on "The United Nations and Democracy" in New York in May 2002
