| Description | At the end of 2006 a new UN Secretary-General will be appointed at the conclusion of Kofi Annan's second five-year term in December. With over 15 peacekeeping operations around the world, continuing need for humanitarian assistance and a crucial process of UN reform underway, the UN requires an effective leader. Unlike selection procedures for other high-level appointments both within and outside the United Nations, the selection of the Secretary-General does not ensure the appointment of a qualified candidate; it lacks any concrete process, timeline or candidate qualifications; occurs largely behind closed doors; and is dictated by the interests of the five permanent members of the Security Council. In light of these deficiencies, UNSGselection.org calls for a more democratic, transparent and effective selection process that ensures the appointment of the most qualified candidate. In the next months leading up to the appointment of Kofi Annan's successor, UNSGselection.org will monitor developments at the UN, disseminate information, share ideas, facilitate dialogue, and launch a campaign outlining concrete proposals for a more democratic and effective process. |
